Rhetorical Situation (should you need a motivating purpose)
These Are two rhetorical situations in which you’d write about UO campus culture:
- President Schill would like to improve the University of Oregon’s campus culture to be more inclusive and would like students’ input on their experience.
- The University of Oregon would like to develop a new marketing campaign aimed at prospective students and their parents, and wants to make the UO’s unique campus culture a main attraction.
Task
Develop an essay that responds to a relevant question at issue about UO campus culture. You are deciding what the most pressing question at issue is, and it may help to use one of the rhetorical situations above to help you narrow this down. Examples of how you might pose different types of questions at issue for each situation:
- In order to make UO campus culture more inclusive, you might focus your inquiry on definingan inclusive campus culture, interpreting its significance to student athletes, international students, or distance students, evaluating the inclusiveness of campus culture to a group of students, analyzing the causes or effects of a non-inclusive campus culture, or proposing a plan for how to create a more inclusive campus culture.
- To develop a new marketing campaign that highlights UO’s campus culture, you might focus your inquiry on what definesUO’s campus culture, what the significance of campus culture is to students’ experience, what the value of a vibrant campus culture is to students’ learning, what effects campus culture has on student success or wellbeing, or proposing a set of strategies to market UO’s campus culture.
Your essay will need to answer multiple questions in order to support an inquiry into the issue, but your thesis is your answer to a primary question at issue, the question you think is most important to analyze deeply before the issue can be resolved. You will develop and support your thesis with explanation, evidence, and a consideration of different perspectives.
