The research paper examines the relevance and significance of historical art objects in the twenty-first century. Students will choose a Baroque art object that has been represented in pop culture. Refer to pages 13 to 15 for a list of Baroque art objects represented in contemporary culture. Other examples are welcomed, but please seek approval from the course instructor before conducting any research. Students will conduct traditional historical research of the art objects and evaluate its incorporation into contemporary culture. What meanings are added or detracted from the object’s representation in the twenty-first century? Is this an example of appropriation?
The research paper is based on at least four scholarly sources. At least two out of the four scholarly sources need to be published within the last twenty years. At least one out of the four scholarly sources needs to be from a physical book. Textbooks, newspaper articles, blogs, and other non-scholarly sources do not count towards the four sources. Scholarly articles are found in art-historical journals. The grade of the final paper is broken down as follows: 40% quality of argument, 30% research and citation, and 30% prose and organization. The research paper (30%) will be 1,450 to 1,825 words in length (6 to 7.5 pages) excluding footnotes and bibliography, Times New Roman, size 12 font, double spaced, 1-inch margin all around, 8.5′′ x 11′′ paper. Footnotes and bibliography entries follow the Chicago Manual of Style (CMoS). An image list and the images are inserted after the research paper and before the bibliography. .
