The Information Systems Context
Information Systems (IS) are contributing to transformative changes in business and everyday life of people. This is an era of digital Darwinism whereby digital technologies enable new types of innovation processes, and offer unprecedented opportunities for adding, recombining and integrating resources in services and products. Taken together, the exponential increases in technological capacity has been argued to distribute control and locus of innovation. These developments in ISD can potentially increase citizen participation in democratic processes, standards of living, and transparency. Simultaneously, digitalization, poses new challenges. For example, social-media might lead to “filter bubbles” reinforcing our established beliefs, fusion of everyday practices with IS create privacy concerns, the “internet-of-things” escalates security related risks and artificial intelligence poses salient ethical consideration.
The Problem
Galway’s population has risen dramatically in the past decade. The current population is estimated at 80,000 people. Due to a lack of infrastructural developments Galway is currently experiencing a myriad of societal and business challenges (e.g. traffic, health, housing, education, digital divide, connectivity etc.). Other global cities with similar challenges and populations are moving towards smart city initiatives whereby they are using state of the art technology to minimise, and in some cases eradicate, existing and emerging challenges at a business and societal level.
The Assignment
Students are required to formulate a research question which investigates how a contemporary information systems phenomenon could impact Galway from a business or societal perspective.
This phenomenon may relate to (but are not limited to) the following topics:
- The impact of specific digital technologies (e.g. Cloud, IoT, Mobility, AI, Analytics, Business Intelligence, Blockchain, Cryptocurrencies, etc.)

Part A: Research Plan (Must not exceed 5 pages)
Research Plan and an Annotated Bibliography
Research Plan
Ultimately, the research plan details how you managed your assignment and will also highlight the design thinking process and the research publications which underpins your final research question. The research plan will comprise five section headings (brainstorming, annotated bibliography, research question, part a: research plan and part b: presentation).ach section heading will comprise specific pages.
Annotated Bibliography
An annotated bibliography is a list of cited sources (journal, website, article, video etc.) about a particular topic, in which each citation is followed by a brief annotation, or discussion of the source. The annotation usually consists of just one paragraph.
The Citation:
The citation includes the bibliographic information of the source. Citations are organized alphabetically. The documentation style required for this assignment is Harvard
referencing style.
The Annotation
The annotation is a brief paragraph (100 – 200 words) following the citation. The annotation provides a summary of the research article and explains why you selected it.

This study reflects the advantage of teacher responses on student papers. When reflected upon as “dialogue” questions to the student, these comments can lead to further interpretation and deeper understanding of a text. Newell found that responses which prompted students to work from their initial drafts brought about more final papers than teacher responses that led them away from their initial drafts with “directive” remarks.
Part B:
Research Presentation
Students are required to develop a presentation which provides an overview of the research question and findings. Each presentation must be between 3-5 minutes in length and can be hosted on YouTube, Vimeo or any other cloud based hosting tool. Ensure that your presentation has a beginning (explain why your research question is important), a middle (illustrate the impact of your research context) and an end (where do we go from here/what do enterprises need to do now?).
Referencing:
Care must be taken to adequately reference all the source material (including websites and electronic sources) used in the compilation of the report. References must be listed alphabetically, by first author (Harvard Style) in the references section. There are many, freely available, reference management tools on the web. But we recommend Endnote
Further, where a section of the report draws heavily from one or more articles, you should properly cite this in the body of the text. e.g.:
Hughes et al (2005) argued that the health sector would be radically transformed by the introduction of collaborative workflow applications
