BEFORE you respond to the essay questions, please carefully read instructions below:
ALL your responses on this page to short essay questions MUST INCLUDE the following elements to address the question asked: (1) Include at least three different quotes from 3 different readings/videos to support your views/arguments; (2) analysis of at least four different examples/illustrations/story details/historical facts from the films/videos/readings that are the focus of a given question.
PLEASE ANSWER ALL OF THE FOLLOWING LIST OF QUESTIONS (24 points):
1. Discuss the ways in which the film The Far Side of the Moon shows that the main character Philippe’s identity crisis comes from his problematic relationship with others and with the environment in which he lives: Discuss story details that show that (a) this relationship is broken, difficult, and/or dysfunctional; and (b) the factors that contribute to Philippe’s broken identity. Then discuss (c) how/where Philippe seeks fulfillment and refuge from feelings of isolation from others and from the reality he lives in, and (b) what actions and choices help him affirm his existence and build a stronger sense of identity.
2. Provide a well-developed analysis of the main two characters in film Bon Cop Bad Cop (by considering their moral qualities and flaws) and discuss the ways in which their portrayal as individuals is a symbolic reflection of a broader cultural reality that affects Canadians and shapes their social experience and view of collective identity.
3. If the story told in Monsieur Lazhar could be considered a metaphor or allegorical representation of the story of Canada and of Canadian identity, then from whose perspective(s) is it told? Whose experience is foregrounded in them? How is this perspective different from the main perspectives of the two other films “The Far Side of the Moon” and “Bon Cop Bad Cop”? Use very specific examples and illustrations from Monsieur Lazhar to that show differences and/or similarities between the experiences of its main character and those of the main characters in the two other films, to support and document your answers.
4. Compare two films of your choice from 3 Quebecois films , and discuss how they engage with the idea that Canadian identity is composed of many layers, or that collective identity has several facets.
