Project One, The Literacy Narrative

Assignment Description We are constantly looking back on important moments in our lives,
and in this essay, you will practice writing about special circumstances you have experienced or
been intimately connected with that you “grew up on” within an educational context. In the
readings that we will examine, you will see that your educational background is related to
adolescence and the search for self, and you will see what it means to narrate and define a
critical emphasis about a chosen topic.
Writers use their individual styles of narration and description to tell their stories. In your essay,
you will explore a concept or action that gets at the very heart of your belief system and the
way you live your life, related to the theme of the narrative.

In your essay, tell your narrative, but tell it with a critical eye. Remember to analyze as you
describe.
Why is the story/experience/issue important to you? Why are you choosing this
particular moment?
How and why is this experience important to other people? In other
words, what can other people
learn from your story/experience? By exploring the how and
why to the experiences/contexts you will be writing about, you will be successful in writing a
strong personal narrative essay. You will constantly
analyze your experiences and the cultural
impact of education in our social environment.
Below are some topics to consider, but remember to choose a topic that intrigues you. Your
topic may be anything that interests you within an educational context. In a reflective essay, you
are working towards answers, not providing them neatly organized and ready for consumption;
your tone is usually tentative and open, and the essay demonstrates a willingness to entertain,
accept, and reject various ideas as your essay progresses from beginning to end. You will have
to constantly look at your topic from several perspectives
.
Some possible topics—
Write about an incidence of cultural/community misunderstanding or miscommunication
you witnessed or heard about with regards to education. “Cultural misunderstanding” can
include not only issues developing from different geographic cultures and/or races but also
differences in generations (for example, you and your parents), gender, and class.
What factors led to the miscommunication? How could it have been prevented? How did
it affect you and influence the way you view another culture?

*Write about a time in your life when you became aware that your educational values
were not universally shared. Under “values” you could include such things as attitudes
about time and work, the freedom and responsibilities of individuals in relationship to
education, the roles of men and women, mothers, fathers, daughters, sons, and
grandparents, etc. What does your educational experience reveal about how values are
acquired, why differences in values exist, and how individuals can negotiate these
differences without sacrificing deeply held beliefs and principles?
Reflect on a particular defining moment in your own life that helped you to develop your
own sense of educational self within a specific community.
How do education and technology fuse and inform our lives?
What does literacy mean to you? How did you learn to read/write? What are your
experiences with reading and writing? How did they possibly shape who you are today?
Rhetorical
Situation
You will also need to consider the rhetorical situation of your essay, paying particular
attention to the
purpose of your personal narrative, your audience (the people who will
read and learn from your essay) as well as examining the
genre of the personal narrative
essay, which will help you develop the kind of
stance you portray in your essay.
Requirements
Your paper has to be five full pages, double-spaced, in MLA format. If your paper is not
