These are the directions for the assignment (from slide 12 of the in-class file):

How do they work to oppose the corporate lobbies and what do they advocate instead?
First, you do not need to work with a partner, I had that in the slides as this was originally supposed to be an in-class assignment, since we no longer meet for class then you can simply do these assignments individually.

This means – pick an issue that corporations lobby on, if you cannot think of an issue, you may chose from the example issues that I have listed. Next, answer the five questions that I have about the issue (the assignment is worth 5 points, so each of these questions is worth 1 point).
For example the issue that I will pick is animal welfare in industrial farming.
What are the corporate lobbies involved in the issue?
This means – which corporate lobbies are involved in lobbying on the issue? Often times corporate lobbies are trade associations or industry associations, which are groups that represent multiple companies in one industry.
In my issue of animal welfare in industrial farming, some corporate lobbies involved in the issue are The National Chicken Council (https://www.nationalchickencouncil.org/) and National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (https://www.ncba.org/), as you can imagine there are other industry groups that also lobby on the issue of animal welfare in farming.
Who are some of their member companies?
Staying on my example, what might be some member companies of the National Chicken Council? I have to go to their website and find which companies are members of the National Chicken Council.
Usually industry groups have on their website a list of member companies, sometimes they do not share that information. In the case of the National Chicken Council, they do not share who are their members but they tell us: “NCC member companies include chicken producer/processors, poultry distributors, and allied industry firms.” (https://www.nationalchickencouncil.org/about-ncc/overview/). Since they do not tell us members I will guess that their members could be: Perdue Chicken, Tyson Chicken, Cargill Chicken, and other big chicken producers that you can google.
What are some of the corporate lobby group’s legal and political goals in the issue?
What do the industry groups advocate on the issue?
In my example, what does the National Chicken Council advocate on the issue of animal rights in industrial farming?
I can go to their website to find that information – usually it is under “issues” or “advocacy” on the web sites.
On the National Chicken Council website they have a section for issues that they advocate, one of those issues is: “Animal Welfare for Broiler Chickens” (https://www.nationalchickencouncil.org/industry-issues/animal-welfare-for-broiler-chickens/). So what positions do they take on the issue? From their website I see that they advocate for certain standards in treatment of chickens, those standards are in housing, space, feed, water, and so on. In the assignment you should explain what some of those standards might be – for example, in housing what are the standards, you can see that they advocate for chicken producers to keep chickens in “growout houses” rather than cages. And so on.

Staying on my example, I go to The Humane Society of the United States website, and I look for what they advocate on the issue of animal rights. I find that they advocate for laws that “cracking down on the cruel confinement of farm animals” (https://www.humanesociety.org/all-our-fights/protect-farm-animals). In the assignment, you should provide one or two sentences on what that means, using your own example
