PROCEDURE:
1. Choose a topic in contact linguistics (see suggestions below) and identify original research publications (3 minimum, at least one published within the last five years) that discuss it. To find suitable publications, use Google Scholar to look for keywords related to your chosen topic. Narrow your search to ‘articles’ and, to identify recent publication, to ‘past five years’ or equivalent. Another useful way to proceed is to check the recent tables of contents of journals that specialise in the field of contact linguistics, such as: Journal of Language Contact, International Journal of Multilingualism, Bilingualism: Language and Cognition, Journal of Multilingual and Multicultural Development, International Journal of Bilingualism.
2. In up to 3000 words, first introduce the general topic and the specific issues that your sources have investigated. Then critically review your sources and their contribution to knowledge around the particular topic.
To do this:
>report on each study’s research questions, methods, data and the key conclusions they arrive at
>relate each study to each other, paying particular attention to their conclusions
> based on the above, evaluate the studies (which one was better argued, which one used more solid methodologies, which one offered the more convincing conclusions). Highlight on what they agree or disagree, and identify those questions that they have left unanswered. In reviewing the studies, pay particular attention to other work that the author follows or takes issue with, and the overall novelty of the insights and conclusions.
3. There is no fixed structure for the essay, though it should have a brief introduction and a conclusion. The best structure may depend on the topic as well as your personal style.
4. Must include a word count, and a full reference list (not included in the word count). If you include examples, they must be numbered consecutively and have a morpheme-by-morpheme gloss and a translation (if from a language other than English). Line spacing should be 1.5.

This is not an exhaustive list – just talk to us about a topic that you are interested in- as long as it is part of Language contact. All topics offer the opportunity to draw links between individual multilingualism and language change due to contact, and this is very much encouraged.
Topic 1:
Child bilingualism Review research on bilingual child language acquisition. What patterns of use of the two (or more) languages have been identified? What has been said concerning the existence of evidence for a separation of the languages? If code-switching has been identified, did it match the predicted patterns (on the basis of social context, or structural constraints)? What explanations have been provided for the latter?
Topic 2: Code-switching Review research that investigated the patterns of mixing of different “languages”, paying particular attention to the claims made about • The structural constraints on code-switching, and/or • The functional motivations for code-switching
Topic 3: World Englishes Review research on a global variety of English from the perspective of language contact influences. How have language contact phenomena shaped this variety? What are the implications for language policy and education? To what extent is the process and the result different from creole formation? A good starting point is the journal World Englishes (http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/journal/10.1111/(ISSN)1467-971X), available online through the library. It has a recent (2016) special issue on World Englishes and Language Contact.
Topic 4: The origin of pidgins, creoles or mixed languages Critically review research regarding the genesis of a (relatively well-researched) creole/mixed language/pidgin (e.g. Haitian Creole, Jamaican Creole, Sranan, Tok Pisin, Mauritian Creole, Michif). What information do the various authors rely on to draw conclusions on the influences at play in the formation of the language? What conclusions do you draw from the available information, against the background of the controversies and debates about pidgin/creole/mixed language genesis and (non)uniformity of pidgin/ creole/mixed language structures?
