Prepare answers for the following questions, three of which will appear on the exam. Again, you will have to answer two out of three questions. Each essay should be at least 750 words long.
What is the relationship between one’s views about human nature and one’s views about politics and the role people should play in governing? To illustrate your point, make sure you draw on the ideas of Hobbes, Locke, Rousseau, and even Kropotkin (the anarchist discussed in the Wolff reading).
2. What makes Socrates so subversive, defiant, and rebellious in Euthyphro and The Apology? How can you reconcile that Socrates with the law-abiding Socrates of Crito? How does his justification for civil disobedience compare with Martin Luther King’s? In their view, under what circumstances do citizens have a political obligation to disobey the law? Be sure to highlight the similarities and differences between these two thinkers.
3. On what grounds does Jean-Jacques Rousseau defend direct democracy? Though they favor popular sovereignty, why do the American founding fathers, especially James Madison and Alexander Hamilton, disagree? Be sure to discuss the concerns that Rousseau and the American founders share, and then discuss their different solutions to that shared concern.
4. Why shouldn’t the people rule according to Plato and Thomas Hobbes? While they agree that only the few should rule, their reasons differ. Make sure that your answer highlights the similarities and dissimilarities between the ideas of these two thinkers.
5. Realists insist that politics is a dirty business in which there is little room for moral purity and virtue. On what grounds do they make this argument? Are there any limits to the evils political actors can commit to serve their ends? Be sure to draw on the Athenian emissaries’ arguments in “The Melian Dialogue” and Niccolò Machiavelli’s The Prince in your answer, and highlight any differences you see between them.
