Poverty and Domestic Violence
Introduction
Domestic violence has affected a number of households from a global perspective. The occurrence of the vice has primarily led to the consequences of activism against gender-based violence. In this directive, the impact of poverty and domestic violence has been subject to studies to establish the correlation between poverty and domestic violence. In essence, studies on the topic have revealed that the occurrence of domestic violence is associated with the financial status of the affected persons. In addition, the occurrence of the violence against the parties has often rendered many to leave their relationships with the goal of starting over. However, it is at the point of starting over that many have had to go through poverty and consequently, reach out for the assistance that in essence has sufficed to help them stabilize.
Description of Studies
Reports by Hill (2019) in the Guardian newspaper indicated that the victims of domestic abuse often face the choice of having their families being pushed to situations of poverty and homelessness or endure the abuse of their partners. Significantly, many victims often choose to stay with their abusers in a bid to evade the probability of falling into poverty. In essence, the victims often end up making a choice that they believe will be of benefit to their dependents despite the level of violence they are subjected to by their partners.
In further studies on the nexus of violence and poverty, Gillum (2019) observes the intersection of intimate partner violence and poverty, particularly in black communities. The study reveals that poverty has the capacity to create unique circumstances that essentially render the affected persons to significantly vulnerable. Primarily, the impact of poverty has been examined in both the developed and developing countries and the study reveals that the probability of intimate partner violence remains high among the black community. In essence, the black women in this perspective suffer both physically and have their psychosocial health negatively impacted. In essence, it is the victims who are at the intersection of poverty that suffer a greater risk of domestic violence and stand at a more disadvantaged position.
In her study, Broaddus (2020) also looks into the intersectionality of race, gender, poverty, and intimate partner violence. In her analysis, she presents a common case involving the African American celebrity Robert Kelly and the circumstances leading to his violent behavior towards his wife Andrea Kelly. Essentially, in her analysis, the study acknowledges the severe impact of the violence on the health of the victims. However, outside the consideration of the victim’s health, the financial barriers have proven to be a major hindrance to the realization and acquisition of better mental health treatment for the victims. In essence, the financial issues arising from the instances of domestic violence have subjected several victims to lack access to shelters and even legal representation against their abusers. Low-income domestic violence survivors have had to survive and rely on entitlement programs for their shelter and legal representation. Evidently, poverty has resulted in the continuity of cases of domestic violence, especially among low-income survivors.
Limitations and Weaknesses
The study by Gillum (2019) presented a limited scope in terms that the study only covered two of the numerous nations that are part of the African diaspora where the black people have been subjected to cases of inequality and exploitation. Significantly, the study does not present a wide coverage of the impact and intersection of domestic violence and poverty in relation to different communities as the vice affects women of all races and backgrounds globally. Primarily, the study should have been more inclusive of the women and victims of domestic violence from other groups.
In Broaddus’s (2020) study, the limitation is subject to the consideration of the impact of violence on the women who have access to resources that facilitate their well-being. Essentially, the study has been associated with low-income women who have to rely on the availability of the entitlement programs. Practically, the study has looked into the financial barrier but has yet to capture the intensity of poverty and its implications on women who are victims of domestic violence. Primarily, including the below low-income women would have captured an all-rounded study.
Theoretical Perspectives
Primarily, the notion of poverty and domestic violence may be aligned with the cultural transmission theory as per the study by Gillum (2019). In essence, the occurrence and prevalence of domestic violence against women within the black community have been as a result of the observance and emulation of common practices.
Contrastingly, Broaddus’s (2020) study manifests the psychological theories of crime based on the fact that the primary issue for the victims of domestic violence is the financial barriers that they are to experience in the event that they leave their relationships. Hence, it is imperative for many others to stay in the relationships to maintain a status quo or because they lack the relevant resources to enable them to seek legal assistance.
