Your task will be to interview two adults, 20 years of age or older, who are at different psychosocial stages of development according to their ages in Erikson’s Psychosocial Theory; to summarize your interviews; and to analyze the responses with respect to Erikson’s theory of psychosocial development and report your findings. The questions that you will ask in the interview are at the end of this document. There are three purposes of this assignment: (1) to learn to conduct interviews, (2) to practice describing the results of interviews, and (3) to relate Erikson’s psychosocial stages to real life. You will need to: 1. Describe each interviewee’s demographic characteristics (Please do not use the interviewees’ real names. Use pseudo names such as Person A and Person B or Interviewee 1 and Interviewee 2, etc.: a. Age b. Gender c. Race d. Family situation: Marital status? Does he/she have children? If so, how many and what are their ages? How about grandchildren? e. Work situation: Does he/she work outside the home? If so, is the work full-time or part-time? In what type of job is he/she employed? (If retired, describe past work situation.) f. Educational level: What is the highest grade completed? If college, in what area did he/she obtain a degree? (If currently in college, note the area of study.) g. Other relevant characteristics 2. Based on responses to the interview questions, discuss the personal and career/job issues with which each interviewee is concerned. 3. Describe Erikson’s stages of young adulthood, middle adulthood, and late adulthood, including approximate ages. Be sure to name and describe the crises of each stage. 4. Determine at which stage each interviewee “should be,” according only to Erikson’s age categories. 5. At which stage do you think each interviewee is, according to your interviews? (The stage you choose may or may not correspond to Erikson’s age categories.) Give the evidence you used for placing the person at this stage. 6. Do you think that Erikson’s theory is an accurate representation of psychosocial issues of adulthood? Why or why not? Interview Protocol Please say the following to the interviewee: I am a member of the Developmental Psychology class this semester at the University of Minnesota-Duluth. One of the topics that we are studying is what concerns people of varying ages. To find out these concerns, we are each interviewing people of different ages. I would like to interview you. The interview should take about one-half hour, and it involves answering a list of questions. Results will be shared in writing with the course Instructor and course Teaching Assistants, but your name will not be revealed. If the person is employed outside the home, plans to become employed soon, or is a college student, ask, “What are your biggest concerns/worries/challenges in your career or job?” 5. What is the most life changing event that has ever happened to you? How did it change your life? 6. Have you met all your life goals? If not, what do you still want to accomplish?
