Hi students, my name is Chelse and I am a junior at GMU. I will be talking with you all today about the importance of protecting yourself and your personal information from unethical people who partake in something called phishing. Phishing is a method where by email or text someone will act like they are apart of a large company in effort to obtain your information such as passwords, account numbers, or you SSN.

Talking Points:

– When receiving one of these messages they may contain logos from a large company containing links and other legit information but you must always be skeptical. Look for signs of a scam such as an attention getter saying “you need to give them information right now” or a generic greeting that has your name misspelled or other possible mistakes.

– If you have found yourself receiving these scams it is important to report them! You can do this by first forwarding the e-mail to the US.FTC Anti-Phishing Working Group  (reportphishing@apwg.org) or if they are text messages to “SPAM” (7726). Then after that you should also report the phishing attack to the FTC at ftc.gov/complaint or https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/how-recognize-and-avoid-phishing-scams. This is important so other people may not fall victim to these attacks.

– If you happen to click on a link from a phishing email or text try to close out as soon as possible and do not answer questions!

– In order to protect yourself make sure your software is always up to date possibly even change your setting to automatically update your software.

– Also making sure all your passwords are strong and unique in unison with a multi-factor authentication on all your accounts will help if someone happened to get your PII.

Tips:

– Find up to date examples of phishing schemes happening currently to make yourself more aware

– Install security software on your laptop to help identify scams

– Call and ask the company that supposedly gave you the message if you are not sure if it is real or not.

Hi, my name is Noah Libera. I’m a junior at George Mason University, majoring in neuroscience. Today, I’m going to be delivering a presentation about a type of cyberattack called phishing. Phishing is when a malicious user sends a communication that appears to be from a legitimate organization seeking personal information they can exploit or illicit access to your digital device.

  1. Phishing is extremely common. Almost everyone with an email address will receive a phishing attempt at some point.
  2. Common organizations that phishers like to imitate include banks, financial and educational institutions, places of employment, and government agencies.
  3. Phishers can be successful by getting you to disclose sensitive information like passwords, and social security numbers, that the phishers can exploit for their personal gain,
  4. Phishers can also succeed by getting you to follow a link to a malicious website or getting you to download malicious code that grants the phisher access to your digital device and the information on it.
  5. Phishing attempts always include some kind of motivation or incentive for interacting with them, whether it be a reward or a possible punishment.

Tips:

  • The best way to protect yourself from phishing is to be skeptical of all online communications you receive.
  • If there’s any reason to believe the communication might be legitimate, go to the official website of the organization or contact them directly to confirm the legitimacy of the communication.
  • If you disclose sensitive information, contact the relevant organization, and explain the situation to them.
  • If something sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
  • Phishers sometimes hack the social media accounts of your friends and family and will try to gain information or get you to follow a link by posing as them.

PART 3
This week you are asked to become the Dean of your College.

On the Discussion Board Forum that is linked, please provide a short paragraph that is from the Dean (aka: you) to all Department Chairs and Instructors in your College.  Don’t worry about formatting this into a formal memo, just provide the ‘meat’ of the message that addresses the following:

How to prevent plagiarism in on a GMU homework.

Note:  Exceptional posts will be forwarded to the CDS Department Chair for possible routing up to the Dean of th College of Science.  Bonus points will be awarded for posts that are forwarded.

PART 4

On the Discussion Board Forum that is linked, please provide 2-3 SHORT paragraphs that is an answer to the following situation.
(Make the assumption that you are living in the dormitory with other students.   In the Scenario, the term “Social Club” means a Fraternity, Sorority, Sports Team,  or other campus related organization.)

You are studying for your CDS-130 Final Exam with a group of friends living in your dorm who are also taking CDS-130.  In the course of studying, one of your friends pulls out a file from their “Social Club” which has your instructor’s Final Exam from a previous semester.  This seems odd to you since our instructor has told you that he/she DOES NOT give back Final Exams.  But anyway, there it is!  After looking at it, you realize that it is a copy of the Answer Key from last Semester.  You ask your friend where he got it and they answer something like:

“My club has files on many courses in our club office.  I don’t know where this one came from, but I want to use it!  I have to get a good grade and this is free help.    I’m going to memorize all the answers so I get a good grade.  SO GET OFF MY CASE! ”

So what do you do?  What should you do?  What is the RIGHT thing to do?  What does your GUT tell you to do?  What do you tell Dr. Lyver (or do you)?

PART 5
Review the 2 websites for the US  Government Office of Research Integrity within the Health & Human Services Department.Select one of the case studies on this site and review it

On the Discussion Board Forum that is linked, please provide a short paragraph that discusses the case study you have selected.  Your paragraph summary needs to contain the following information:

  • Year of the ethical breech
  • Where was the research being done (a university, US Gov’t Lab, contractor, …)
  • What did the researchers do wrong
  • What difference would it have made if they “succeeded” with their ethical breech
  • What was the ‘penalty’ for the ethical breech
