Based upon your readings of Berry and Day’s Arkansas History: A Collegiate Reader, pp. 255-444, please answer the following questions. GATEWOOD
- Based upon your reading of Gatewood, what do you think is the most striking characteristics of living on a nineteenth century Arkansas plantation like Sunnyside?
- Was plantation life at Sunnyside similar or different to that lived on plantations in other areas of the South? That is, what made Sunnyside’s experience both similar as well as unique to other regions of the South?
- From your readings about Sunnyside, what were the experiences of blacks who lived, worked, and died on this particular plantation? Do you think their lives were much different than that of their white counterparts? If so, how and why?
WOLF
- Wolf came of age in a different region of Arkansas than that of Sunnyside. Briefly explain what made his upbringing both similar as well as different than that of that lived at Sunnyside.

- What are the most important reasons that Arkansas became a lynching state? Please be sure to develop your points completely.
- What are some of the long term consequences of this phenomenon? That is, are there any effects that remain for Arkansas society and culture today? Be sure to explain in in-depth detail.

- What were the immediate events that precipitated the Elaine Riot?
- What were the long term developments that Taylor believes spurred the racial unrest? Specifically, what was the role of black union organizing, and why was it perceived as a threat by whites?
