  1. Based upon your reading of Gatewood, what do you think is the most striking characteristics of living on a nineteenth century Arkansas plantation like Sunnyside?
  2. Was plantation life at Sunnyside similar or different to that lived on plantations in other areas of the South? That is, what made Sunnyside’s experience both similar as well as unique to other regions of the South?
  3. From your readings about Sunnyside, what were the experiences of blacks who lived, worked, and died on this particular plantation? Do you think their lives were much different than that of their white counterparts? If so, how and why?
