Description

Understanding the ways in which culture influences our love lives [chapters 5, 6 and 1 + outside research as required] All three sections of this prompt are required for this assignment The prompt contains guidance on specific expectations for how each of the three sections is to be completed, general guidelines for completing assignments can be found in the ‘Guidelines for completing weekly assignments document’ in the Introduction section of your course page. (1) Research and report on common ‘cultural myths’ of beauty and sexuality in American culture. Feel free to narrow your reporting to the segment of the population of your choice. This section of your paper will likely take 2+  double spaced pages I will be looking for the myths to be clearly stated as well as a reporting of ‘why’ the culture holds this myth – typically there is something in the development of the culture and/or the dominant religious traditions of the culture that will help support the why? Make sure the reader understands where the myths came from and why they might still be in existence. (2) Show, using specific examples, how your reported myths of beauty and sexuality are maintained, through direct and indirect messages we receive from our social systems [peers, family, school, media, religion, and politics] and comment on the potential [or known] influence of these messages on our beliefs / expectations about beauty and sexuality. This section of your paper will take at least 2 double spaced pages I will be looking for specific examples of how your reported myths have been taught directly or indirectly through our social systems. For example, we learn as women that are bodies are ‘inappropriate’ for public display through our continued enforcement of female targeted dress codes on school campuses, by being told that breast feeding in public is ‘gross’ or ‘rude’ etc. This section of your paper will probably require citations for the examples you provide [scenes from movies, dialogue from TV programs, lyrics from songs, advertisements for products, legislation that impedes our individual expression] I also want to hear your critical analysis of the potential effect of these myths on people’s beliefs about themselves and others. For example, continued reinforcement of the myth that women’s bodies are ‘inappropriate’ for public display we internalize the responsibility for how we are treated when we are harassed because of the way we are dressed. (3) Reflect on how these myths have affected your seeking, forming and maintaining intimate relationships with others; or your desire to seek relationships with others. This section of your paper will likely take you 2+ pages double spaced I will be looking for ‘insight’ into how these myths have effected you For example, since our myth of beauty in this country is typically focused on being tall and skinny, I have never felt comfortable in my own body which is short and muscular.
