Research Essay Prompt
The final essay you will write is a research essay. However, unlike some research essays you have written thus
far, this essay is what I call an “Argumentative Research Essay.” Therefore, you are required to not only inform
a reader about a topic (an “informative” or “exploratory” essay), you must also take a side and assume a
position within an argument, issue, or debate and argue for that position (i.e., have a thesis statement). This
essay must have a minimum of 5 sources and adhere to MLA format and citation standards (we will discuss
those standards throughout this unit).
Minimum page count: 5-6 pages (this does not include the Work Cited page)

Broadly speaking, there are two approaches you may choose from when selecting a topic:
1. You may select a new topic.
2. You may select a topic from a previous essay (only essays from this class, and preferably, essays that
were meaningful to you) and develop that topic into a research essay.
Both approaches have strengths and weaknesses, and we will discuss those strengths and weaknesses over the
next few weeks. However, begin thinking about a topic now! You do not want to wait too long
