AAST 380/SOCY 329-02: Final Project
Racism & Social Policy
Student Learning Outcome 1: Students will identify social policies and practices that have been built on racist ideologies, which have led to ongoing structural inequalities.
Social Policy Paper
- Write an 6-8 (of content) page essay addressing a selected social policy/social institution. You’re to thoroughly research the policy so that you are adequately able to articulate pros (if any) and cons for its implementation. In other words, try to determine whether or not these policies have in some way benefitted African Americans (and other people of color), while understanding how it has negatively impacted their opportunities. **See below for example ideas.
- Papers are REQUIRED to be 6-8 pages (of content); typed; double-spaced; 12-point font, Times New Roman and submitted as a MICROSOFT WORD document. No paper will be accepted if not in the correct format. Select a preferred citation format (e.g., APA, MLA, ASA). Guidelines for APA Style references and citations will be provided in OAKS, but you’re able to use the citation format you’re most comfortable with.
- You’re required to have a minimum of ten sources for your paper. Among these sources, you need to have at least one book; two academic journals; two reputable online sources (e.g., HuffPost, Washington Post, CNN, NY Times, NY Daily News, etc.).
- **Due: Wednesday, December 13, 2020: All papers are required to be uploaded in the appropriate folder in OAKS Dropbox by 11:59pm. No late submissions will be accepted under any conditions.
Approaches/Questions to Consider for the Policy Paper:
- What roles does the collective white population have in the Black Freedom Struggle? Should white America be involved? What role do they play in eradicating racism and white supremacy? How (or should) other marginalized groups lump their struggles with the Black Freedom struggle? Is there room for intersectionality?
- What does higher education and/or corporate America really look like if affirmative action is applied as intended? What does higher education and/or corporate America really look like if affirmative action is removed completely?
- Despite the evidence that show K-12 schools remain largely segregated by race (or disproportionately Black or disproportionately white), some argue attending “neighborhood” schools could be beneficial to African American students (e.g., go to school with their peers; more black teachers, etc.). What are the benefits of Black students going to schools that’s disproportionately Black? What needs to be done to improve those schools to be equitable to majority white schools?
- Although the media plays a significant role in shaping individuals attitudes, explain the benefits of social media platforms to bring awareness to [insert social issue/cause/concern here].
- Should African Americans receive reparations: yes or no? If yes, what does African American reparations look like? Who directly benefits? If no, provide a detailed critique explaining your stance.
- Given that residential segregation is the “key ingredient” to the social ills that plague Black America, should Black Americans advocate for and work toward creating an all-inclusive residentially segregated, economically insulated, Black society (e.g., think the Buy Black Movement)? Should Black Americans reinvent and proactively sustain Black Wallstreet – Black Wall Streets across America in all major cities with large Black populations such as Philadelphia, Washington, DC, Atlanta, Chicago, Houston, Charlotte, etc.? **This all-inclusive model of communities exist among Jewish populations (NY), Cuban populations (Little Havana), Italian populations (Little Italy), Irish (Boston), various Asian groups (Chinatown, Koreatown, etc.).
- In a 12-year span, America has elected its first Black President and its first Black (and Woman) Vice-President. These unprecedented accomplishments by all accounts were believed by many to be unachievable in their lifetimes (e.g., Baby Boomers, Generation Xers). By most accounts, you should be keenly aware of the history of voter suppression tactics, racial violence toward African Americans when attempting to register to vote/voting, etc. As such, how accurate is the narrative that 13% (20% by some reports) Black men voted for Trump?
- Discriminatory criminal justice practices, police violence and brutality continue to plague Black communities. From arrests to sentencing, African Americans continue to be criminalized at higher rates than their white counterparts despite the evidence show much higher criminal rates among whites across the board. How should Black America confront these discrepancies: matriculate in the criminal justice environment as lawyers (especially defense attorneys), judges, police officers (policing overall)?
***Remember these are simply ideas and suggestions. If you choose one, feel free to move in a different direction. I want you to not only be creative in your approach, but also become major critical thinkers in how to address the social institution you’re interested in. You will need to critically interrogate the history of the policy/institution, its racist implications, its continuation to negatively impact African Americans, etc.
