All,
Here is your final play reading assignment:
Love Suicides at Sonezaki is one of Chikamatsu Monzaeman′s most widely read play from the bunraku theater of Japan. It tells the tragic tale of Tokubei, a young man dealing in soy sauce or oil, and also an orphan, and a young woman, a courtesan named Ohastsu.
This play is an example of the love suicide subgenre of bunraku that was popular in Japan in the early 1700s. The name of this type of play is sewamono.
After reading the play, answer the following questions:
1. Compare and contrast Tokubei and Ohatsu′s story to Romeo and Juliet′s circumstances. What do find to be similar, and what different about their tales of tragic love, beyond the plot?
2. Tokubei and Ohatsu die in a suicide pact. Was this the only way to solve the problem? Could they have found a way to escape this fate?
3. Why do you think Japanese audiences enjoyed watching this this and other stories that end in the suicides of young lovers?
4. Do you think this story would be equally moving if it was performed with real people playing the roles instead of puppets? Or do you think, based on the manner in which the story is told (language, the use of the narrator, etc) that the play is best performed in bunraku with puppets.
