Persuasive Presentation Assignment
1. Your purpose is to influence the attitudes, beliefs, values or behaviors of your audience
members. You may choose any topic that meets this purpose.
2. Your introduction should include a proposition/thesis that asserts some course of action.
3. Use 3-5 reliable sources from books, articles, interviews or Internet. See tests of evidence
on pages 351-352. State approximately 5 verbal citations during your speech.
4. Use one or more persuasive techniques: logos, logical proof; pathos, emotional proof; and
ethos, source credibility. (pp. 353-355).
5. Your introduction should gain attention, include listener relevance, your credentials, and a
proposition/thesis.
6. The body of your presentation should follow the organizer handout and the Monroe
Motivated Sequence pattern described on pages 356-357.
7. Your conclusion should include a brakelight function, brief summary of arguments,
clincher, and a call to action.
8. Turn in a typed sentence outline immediately after you deliver your speech. Use the
format in the speech organizer. List your references/works cited at the end of your outline
rather than on a separate page. Use MLA or APA style.
10. Prepare speaking notes. You may either highlight your typed sentence outline or prepare a
key word outline on a separate paper or note cards. Turn in your notes after your speech.
11. Deliver your speech in extemporaneous style.
12. Do not use visual resources for this presentation. Although visual resources are useful in
all speeches, this will give you a public speaking experience that does not rely on them.
The time for this presentation is 5 minutes. Up to five points will be deducted for
speeches not within the time frame of 4-6 minutes.
