While you may choose any two to compare and contrast, be sure to pair them up so that you have a specific focus of analysis and exploration: thematic, rhetorical, or issue oriented. Know what your point is, so that you can state it clearly and support it. What are the significances of these similarities and differences? Know what you are writing toward, and it will help you to get there. Be sure to document your use of the essays with proper MLA in-text citations and a works cited page. The Basics: ? Format and Documentation: MLA. See A Pocket Style Manual, pages 176-186 ? Length: 1000 words minimum, 1250 words maximum. Use either Times New Roman or Calibri 12 or Courier New 10. Address the essays in present tense (see Hemingway example). ? Use “we” or “the reader,” not “I” (see Hemingway example). ? Use author’s full name at first reference, last name only in subsequent references (see Hemingway example). ? Stories and essays are in quotations, not italics, not underlined. Considerations for the assignment ? What point are these essays making? What is their tone, voice, or attitude? ? How do the authors make their points? What details from the text help to make these points? ? How do the authors approach their ideas similarly or differently? Are they similar thematically, ideologically, politically? How do the details fit together? ? How do the authors use rhetorical strategies? ? Are there problems, contradictions, or inconsistencies that you see? ? Read the Questions for Study and Discussion and the Questions for Critical Reading to help in focusing on particular aspects of the essays. ? When people, circumstances, or ideas seem very similar, look at the differences. If they seem very different, look for similarities. Otherwise, you are just stating the obvious.
