Essay #1: It’s legal but is it just?

When and where do we have a reasonable expectation of privacy?

  1. Purpose:

Essay 1 gives students an opportunity to draw on their own experiences and develop a foundation of thinking for the course that’s ultimately rooted heavily in discovery for oneself.  A good place to start is to consider what characteristics make an act/ action “legal” while still calling “justice” into question.

  1. Background:

Surveillance cameras in public places have always raised questions of privacy: whether or not we  are in public or private spaces (or somewhere in between), whether a specific person (i.e. law enforcement official) can be subjected to surveillance, who is holding the camera, whose actions are being captured by the camera and what will be done with the footage over time.  Surveillance issues often include questions raised by the involvement of governmental officials or private detectives, but the phenomenon of a private citizen invading the privacy of other random individual citizens is fairly new. Think here of people recording in public at random or the use of privately-owned drone surveillance equipment.

  1. The Prompt:

In a 5 page thesis-driven paper, consider the actions of “surveillance man” and draw upon your own experiences to assess an example of a situation when an act/ occurrence was in fact legal but its categorization as “just” was in question.  Evaluate the circumstance of an act being legal while not necessarily being just and draw comparisons/ contrasts between your example and the circumstance of “surveillance man.”  Prepare and execute a thoughtful consideration of the two examples and produce an organized paper that addresses both examples as well as the uncertainty of the legality of the situation.

Sample Outline. A case of K-pop Idols

The popular music industry of South Korea, known as K-pop, has become a global phenomenon that has captivated listeners all over the world. K-pop is not just a musical style; it is also a cultural phenomenon distinguished by its meticulously choreographed performances, gorgeous music videos, and devoted fan base. Thanks to the international success of K-pop bands like BTS, BLACKPINK, and EXO over the past few decades, South Korea has developed into a significant player in the global music industry.

The grueling training regimes that aspiring idols must through are a complex and frequently contentious component of the K-pop industry that lies behind the glitzy stage performances and chart-topping tunes. These training regimens, which are primarily administered by entertainment companies, are renowned for their rigor, strictness, and intensity. Before making their stage debut as a part of a K-pop group or as a solo artist, aspiring idols spend years receiving instruction in singing, dancing, and personality development. In the very competitive K-pop industry, this instruction is seen as a must for success.

However, these training programs’ strict character has generated moral dilemmas and worries. Critics contend that the rigorous training can be physically and mentally stressful on young recruits, resulting in problems including mental health issues, exploitation, and the abandonment of personal goals. In light of the fact that many unfulfilled ambitions are sacrificed, the question arises: Are these rigorous trainings justified?

Introduction

The K-pop industry is known for its glamor, glamour, and international stardom. But beneath this glittering exterior lie the tales of countless young people who set out on difficult journeys to chase their ambitions of becoming K-pop idols. These ambitious artists step into a world of demanding training regimens, where entertainment companies painstakingly mold their lives in the pursuit of excellence.

This case study goes deep into this complex problem, examining the moral implications of K-pop training and how it affects the hopes and goals of aspiring young performers. This study’s main concern is whether the demanding and frequently brutal training regimen is morally acceptable when only a small number of artists achieve success while leaving many others with dashed hopes. We will look at the experiences of K-pop trainees, their families, and the larger South Korean societal background in order to respond to this topic. We seek to shed light on the complex dynamics of the K-pop industry and the effects of its training procedures on the lives of aspiring idols by examining the motives, sacrifices, and challenges of individuals engaged.
