The Humanities Essay category asks students to consider the importance and impact of humanistic works in our broad world. The essay should engage and analyze two or more creative works as part of the essay. These creative works may come from architecture, theatre, music, the plastic arts (painting, sculpture, mixed- media art), literature, poetry, photography, dance, or film. The essay may, for instance, examine how creative works reflect, influence, or comment upon major issues in the world at large—but you should identify clearly what issue(s) you want to make an argument about. The essay may analyze creative works that have inspired you as an individual to become an activist in a social justice movement, given you insight into contemporary challenges, or intensified your connection to creative cultural work. However, these are only examples and ideas. The essay should explore and analyze the creative and/or performative arts.

The primary criteria for judging the essay include:

1) the thoughtful reaction to the prompt and the relation of creative works to other important issues in the world,

2) the depth of analysis of two or more creative works, which leads to a richerunderstanding of one’s involvement or understanding of being alive, and

3) the clarity and depth of writing. All submissions must be typewritten on white paper, double spaced, on one side of the page and in 12-point font.

The essay must have a title page with the date of completion and student ID number only (NO NAMES). The essay should be between 1000-3000 words and address, in some manner, the broad prompt above.
