We learned about diverse kinds of Christianity in Week 5. For this assignment, you will focus on a specific primary source, the Gospel of Thomas, that is evidence of such diversity. Your main task is to describe the portrayal of Jesus in the Gospel of Thomas. Here are some questions to help you gather information:
- What kinds of things does Jesus say and do?
- What is puzzling about Jesus in the Gospel of Thomas? How do other characters react to Jesus?
- How does Jesus bring salvation?
- How does the Gospel of Thomas compare to other gospels (such as the Gospel of Mark)?
- Why do you think at least some early Christians found the Gospel of Thomas meaningful?
You do not have to answer each of the questions above to write a successful paper. A successful paper will address three items:
- It will describe the portrayal of Jesus.
- It will include at least three relevant and specific examples.
- It will treat the Gospel of Thomas fairly. Do not try to prove that the Gospel of Thomas is right or wrong. The goal is to try to understand what this primary source shows about the beliefs of at least some early Christians.
Format and Parenthetical References
250-500 words, or 1-2 pages (typed in double-space, 12 pt. font). If your paper exceeds 2 pages, the extra text must be absolutely necessary to your paper. In other words, stay within the limit.
