Lithograph of the Boston Massacre

Lithography was a popular artform in the 1800’s that involved creating an image of something through an impression using a flat surface (made of stone or metal) and an oily substance. This early printing technique was invented by German actor and playwright Alois Senefelder. Attached in this document is a lithography published in 1856 by W. Champney of J.H. Bufford’s Lith., depicting an event in U.S. history known as the Boston Massacre.

The Boston Massacre occurred much earlier than when lithography came about (in the year 1770), so there are actually a few different interpretations of the event. What happened was a skirmish between British soldiers and a crowd of protesters in the town of Boston, Massachusetts. This moment in time was a significant step towards the path of revolution, and W. Champney’s version is fascinating because of the inclusion of Crispus Attucks, an African American sailor who was among the first two die during the struggle. Many of the earlier interpretations of the Boston Massacre do not include Attucks, so to see him acknowledged like that during a time in U.S. history that was full of racism is definitely interesting.
