Carrying capacity = The maximum number of individuals an ecosystem can carry indefinitely. It varies with environmental conditions and from species to species. Each ecosystem has a specific carrying capacity for a given species.
Due to this extra population, there is an enormous strain on the climate. This can be due to the over-usage of natural resources, industrialization, deforestation, and pollution. Many scientists believe that over-population is the major cause of global warming. This concept is neither entirely correct nor entirely incorrect. This is due to the fact that not only the quantity but the average pressure exerted by each individual is increasing.
For example, the average meat consumption has increased a lot since the last decade. Let the population grow, but reduce meat consumption so that the ecosystem is not under too much stress. Fertility control is one of the measures to be undertaken. It should also be noted that in many of the developed and some developing nations, the population growth is either zero or negative. So, the way we utilize our natural resources is very important. Some of the measures to be undertaken are
1. Reduce meat consumption
2. Afforestation
3. Using renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power
4. Promote usage of electric vehicles to reduce pollution.
