1. Please view the video Fastlane.mov. Then, read the articles included in this section for background on this topic.
The article “Technology Fixes” contrasts the concept of social engineering with the concept of technological fix. The term “social engineering” appears, for example, on p. 209. Social engineering is the opposite of technological fix; it approaches problems as social problems that involve complex human elements, and consider these elements or social impacts in formulating a solution. It often involves social actions in solving problems instead of focusing on technology.
You should read this article and the powerpoint “Appropriate Technology” carefully and think about how to use technology appropriately to solve social problems. The other articles consist of reports/analysis of the development of the car industry in China at various points of the 21st century. Your main task of this week is to use ideas from the first two articles (social engineering, technological fix, appropriate technology, etc.) to analyze the problems associated with the development of the car industry in China.

You should first define the term “social engineering approach.”
c. Describe 2-3 transportation technologies currently implemented in China that you think can be considered appropriate technology. Explain why they are considered appropriate technology, and how they can provide engineering solutions to problems caused by the increasing number of cars in China.
2. Please read the two articles about GMO and review the powerpoint on appropriate technology, and answer the following questions:
a. Is GMO appropriate technology? Please go into depth about the positive and negative consequences of GMO to come to your conclusion. Your description of the positive and negative aspects of GMO should be detailed and your analysis should be specific.
b. In your opinion, what is the right approach to GMO? Please explain.
