PSYCHOLOGY

Dylan is 15 years old and in Junior Cert year in a Community College 15 kilometres from his rural home. He lives with his father Pat who is a farmer and his mother Eileen who does voluntary work for the local Catholic Church. He is the eldest of four children with the youngest twin boys aged two and a sister Maggie aged 10.

Dylan has been doing ok in school at his subjects but has been mitching from school for the past weeks, forging his mother’s signature on sick notes. He hangs out on his own beneath a bridge in the town smoking and getting cider from older men who often drink nearby.

Recently Dylan has noticed that he has strong feelings for Alan a lad in his class and this terrifies him. He tries to find excuses to chat to Alan but gets tongue tied and nervous. Dylan knows that he was never really into girls but it didn’t bother him much until now.

Since first year he has been at the receiving end of name calling and was used to being called gay-boy as he was not into sports in the school and didn’t dress in the same fashion as his classmates. This has gotten worse recently as his classmates have started posting material on their social network sites about him and someone made up a fake Facebook page in his name advertising his availability for gay sex.

Dylan is getting more and more isolated in school and couldn’t tell his parents what is going on. He has thoughts of ending all his pain as he lies on his bed listening to music at home .He doesn’t know where to go for help or who would listen to him as he lives in a rural area and he doesn’t know anyone else who has feelings like he does. Dylan has also noticed that he is getting very edgy and panicky when he goes into the main hall in the school. He thought he was going to have a heart attack during the last time he was there for an assembly of all students.

His best friend Maria has noticed that Dylan is withdrawn as he used to text her every day and night just chatting about the music they both enjoyed. He has known her since Primary School and she is going out with one of his classmates. Maria called over to see Dylan and asked him what was wrong, he broke down in tears and told her that he thought he was gay and that the thought of telling his parents made him physically sick. He didn’t tell her about his panicky feelings or about the fact that he was thinking about self-harm

Maria tells Dylan that he should talk to someone and she refers him to you who works in the school as a Social Care Worker.
