Research Paper
This course entails one major project: An anthropological analysis of a controversial piece of legislation. Each student will choose a piece of (attempted) legislation—it could be in NYC, the state of New York, the USA; in a different country; or it could be international. Through this assignment, students will:
Increase understanding of the role of formal and informal forces on law,
Develop skills for analyzing systems of powers at work in human groups,
Develop capabilities necessary to compose scholarly papers.

As part of this assignment, students will be expected to:
Critically analyze in-class and outside academic (peer reviewed) materials,
Conduct at least two interviews with individuals connected to this piece of legislation (i.e., supporters, opponents, lawyers, activists, stakeholders, etc.),
Research and read printed materials related to the legislation (i.e., legal briefs, newspaper articles, op-eds, blog posts, newsletters, etc.),
Integrate issues/themes from class readings/lectures and your outside research in a research paper analyzing the sociocultural and political factors related to the controversy surrounding the law.
This is to help you find a topic

The outline must consist of
