Assessed Coursework Outline

The marking criteria can be found on page 5.

Each student is required to submit one report, not exceeding 4,500 words, based upon the student’s research and discussion. The report should contain a description of the chosen company, and the products and services it has decided to sell internationally. The chosen host country must be one from the peer poster presentations, and the selected foreign market entry method for this country must be clearly stated and justified. See further details below.

Each student is required to:

Research, prepare and present how global trends shape the strategy and organizational structure of firms

In order to fulfil the report requirements, the students must select:

·        A firm as a “case study” that they wish to assess. The firm can be of any kind and headquartered anywhere in the world, provided that the firm is real.

·        One of the global trends discussed in class.

The student must

·        Describe the current firm’s strategy and organization

·        Describe how both the firm’s strategy and organization are affected by the chosen current mega trend, and explain why.

The analysis should be fully justified in terms of why these trends should apply to the firm and its products/ services; what are the expected changes of the company strategy (if any) and organizational structure (if any).

Please discuss this with the module leader if you are in any doubt.

The final strategy and organizational structure will depend very much upon the firm, the product or service, the foreign market served and the rationale for any step-change. However, your plan should include:

A brief description of the chosen firm and its products / services:

The student must provide some background information about the firm, its products, value proposition, etc. The company overview can be presented using whatever frameworks you have learnt from this module and from other modules to describe the company.

The student is encouraged to think about the trends of the industry the firm operates in, and how these are linked to the present product/service offering. A critical element that the student must include is how and why the firm has the resources to engage with the proposed changes.

The current status

a.    Firms strategy

The student is expected to apply the Bartlett & Ghoshal Model of international strategy to the chosen firm. The student should assess how the model fits the strategy adopted by the firm.

b.    Organizational structure

The student is expected to analyse the organizational structure of the firm (e.g. global product structure). The student should discuss how the organization structure fits with the firm’s international strategy.

The future status

The student should describe the key elements of the chosen global trend and how this global trend affects the current status of the firm and how the firm should adapt/ evolve.

a.    Firm strategy

The student should discuss how the chosen global trend affects (or to what extent) the firm international strategy.

b.    Organizational structure

The student should discuss how the chosen global trend affects (or to what extent) the firm’s organizational structure. In class, we have discussed how the organizational structure changes over time based on the inputs of the external environment. What changes does the current organizational structure need to undergo in order to respond to the pressures from the global trends?

Theory, data and information

In preparing your report, it is expected that the student will use academic sources and provide a theoretical framework. The student should use information in the public domain, such as up-to-date country profiles, market intelligence reports, peer poster presentations, and company information (for example, published material, electronic databases and the world-wide-web) to provide grounding for the suggested choices. The student is not expected to obtain confidential information from any particular company or organisation, but an effort to collect primary data is often rewarded.

The student must include a theoretical framework among those seen during their course to justify his/her choice. Example of frameworks are Dunning Eclectic paradigm, Upsala model, LLL theory etc. If the student wishes to use a different framework, he/she should consult the module leader in advance.

Recommendations

The student should provide a clear recommendation of the optimal strategy and changes to organizational structure. The student should clearly summarise his/her recommendations. He/she might also discuss the limitations to the work and the type of information the company would need in reality to make an informed decision.

In short…

The student needs to propose a sound analysis of how a current global trend affects a company strategy and structure, drawing upon theory and good quality information.

Assignments should be a maximum of 4,500 words in length.

Conclusions and related outcomes (consequences and implications) are logical and reflect student’s informed evaluation and ability to place evidence and perspectives discussed in priority order. Conclusion is logically tied to a range of information, including opposing viewpoints; related outcomes (consequences and implications) are identified clearly. Conclusion is logically tied to information (because information is chosen to fit the desired conclusion); some related outcomes (consequences and implications) are identified clearly. Conclusion is inconsistently tied to some of the information discussed; related outcomes (consequences and implications) are oversimplified.
