The topic of false memories is a very important one for a variety of reasons. As mentioned in Anderson’s Cognitive Psychology and its Implications, the topic has received attention because of circumstances where individuals have claimed to have recovered memories of childhood abuse that never actually occurred. It goes on to discuss some of the research that has gone into the creation of false memories and highlights the fact that it appears to be fairly easy to create them.
One of the reasons that this topic is so important to researchers in cognitive psychology is what it says about the accuracy of memories. If memories can be “created,” then they are much more dynamic and fluid than some have previously thought.
The existence of false memories can also generate questions regarding eyewitness testimony and the accuracy of the things these people claim to have seen.
