Instructions
PART ONE: WRITE 100 WORDS IN A WIKIPEDIA SANDBOX
1) Please create a Wikipedia account as discussed in class. Once you create an account, please email your username to your tutorial leader.
2) Join the WikiEd course page as discussed in class. Please make sure you are logged in when you join the page. A link to our course page is located on Moodle.
3) Choose a topic. Students can choose to write their 100 words on any topic, whether that topic has a Wikipedia page or not. The only requirement is that the topic meet WP:Notability criteria. This means that the topic should be a person, place or thing that can be discussed by citing numerous external sources (e.g. newspaper articles, academic journals or books, or reputable websites). An external source is a source that is not directly affiliated with the person, place or thing.
4) Write 100 words in your Wikipedia sandbox about your topic. The 100 words must be written in a Wikipedia encyclopedic-style, and follow WP:Neutrality, WP:Verifiability, and WP:Notability. Please make sure to include the following:
- One Level 2 header with your topic name.
- Three wikified internal (blue) links.
- One Level 2 header with the word “Reference List”.
- Two wikified citations, including in-text citations and full citations in the reference list. Please ensure that you include strong academic citations where possible.
PART TWO: THE WORD DOCUMENT
5) Once you have completed items 1-4, please take a screenshot or picture of your Wikipedia sandbox. Please make sure you are logged in. Please make sure your username, the 100 words, and the reference list are visible. Paste the screenshot into a Word document.
6) Please write 1,500 words (not including the reference list) as you answer the following questions:
- Discuss why Wikipedia is an example of an OPEN-SOURCE project. (Minimum 250 words)
- Discuss why the COMMONS-BASED PEER PRODUCTION on Wikipedia is both a source of controversy as well as possibility. Make sure to refer to your 100 words as an example of a potential contribution to the Wikipedia encyclopedia that could be viewed as either helpful or problematic. You might want to reflect on differences between “expert” and “amateur” contributors in your answer.
7) When answering the questions, please cite strong academic sources as often as possible (i.e. journal articles, books, newspaper articles, and reputable blogs). The only Wikipedia pages that can be cited are Wikipedia policy pages (e.g. WP:Verifiability), and they should be cited as websites.
8) Please provide in-text citations and a reference list in APA style.
9) Papers are to be uploaded to the appropriate location on Moodle via Turnitin. If you have any privacy concerns about Turnitin, please come to speak with me.
