Here’s your chance to do a little thinking and reading and writing on your own, applying what you’ve learned about fallacies and cognitive biases to a short paper.
Pick one of the inductive fallacies from lecture 6 OR one of the cognitive biases from lecture 7 and write a SHORT (1-2 pages, double-spaced, one-inch margins, 12pt type) paper in which you:
1. List the fallacy OR cognitive bias define it (in your own words– no other sources) and explain what exactly makes it a fallacy OR cognitive bias. Why is it a wrong pattern of reasoning or an unhelpful psychological pattern of thinking?
2. Use some examples to illustrate your point above– you can use examples from the internet, but your explanations must be your own. Examples from your own life and experience are my favorites to read about. But feel free to do whatever you want. You can also email me or post on the discussion board if you’re not sure about or have questions about your example. That’s totally fine.
3. Finally: what is interesting to you about this fallacy OR cognitive bias? Do you see it in your area of study? Do you see it in the news? Do you encounter it in your life? Tell me a bit about where you find this fallacy and why it bothers or appeals to YOU.
Save it to a file (word is nice, but I can read pages, too) and name it yourlastname-paper.docx (or .pdf or whatever format it is).
Make sure it’s readable– if I can’t read it, I can’t grade it. I’ll let you know if I’m having a technical problem.
