NOTE: The following abbreviations are used throughout the case. HBM= Health Belief Model; TTM/SOC= Trans theoretical Model/Stages of Change. Please type your responses to each of the questions below.
Molly is a 22 year old college student who lives in the dorm with her roommate Kristen. She is 5’6” tall and currently weighs 162 pounds. She gained 15 pounds during her freshman year and is anxious to take the weight off in time for graduation in May 2020. Molly carries 16-18 credit hours each semester and states she has no time to exercise in any formal way. She eats all of her weekday meals in Penland and receives free food at the restaurant she works at on the weekends. Her roommate has a sweet tooth and keeps candy bars, sugar-coated cereal, Pop Tarts, and several kinds of desserts in the dorm room, all of which she willing shares with Molly. Molly and Kristen both find these foods hard to resist. In addition, Molly’s significant other likes to go out to bars several nights a month. As a result, they frequently munch on bar food and drink beer.

- List the six (6) constructs from the HBM; explain how you would use each of them to educate Molly about her current eating and exercise behaviors.
- Now use the TTM to gather even more information about Molly’s eating habits and her willingness to change her behavior in order to lose the 15 pounds she recently gained.
- Give an example of one question you would ask Molly that illustrates the use of the stage construct from TTM.
- Give an example of one question you would ask Molly that illustrates the use of the decisional balance construct from TTM.
- Write two questions you would ask Molly that illustrates the use of the self-efficacy construct from TTM.
-One question should assess her situation-specific confidence;
-Other questions should assess one type of temptation. (Be sure to identify which one of the three types of temptation you chose to assess: negative affect or emotional distress; positive social situations; craving).
- Imagine that you used the stage construct and assessed Molly in preparation for making a change in her diet and exercise. Choose either diet OR exercise and use whichever one you choose to answer the two questions below. Be sure to be consistent all the way through. For example, if you choose exercise, answer the three questions below In light of exercise as the focus of behavior change.
- List the four (4) intervention strategies appropriate to use for someone in the preparation stage of readiness and give a specific example for each that would be relevant for Molly to do to reach her goal.
- List the two (2) intervention “don’ts” for a person in the preparation stage of readiness
- and give a specific example for each that you would be sure NOT to do with Molly. The two “don’ts” are “Do not recommend general behavior changes” and “Do not refer to small changes as “not good enough”.
