PLEASE CHOOSE TWO OF THE TITLES BELOW:

  1. According to Baker and Maier (2011: 3) translators and interpreters ‘are increasingly held responsible for the consequences of their behaviour and therefore have to reflect carefully about how their decisions, both textual and non-textual, impact the lives of others’. Discuss this statement citing relevant examples as appropriate.
  2. Develop a case-study with which to critically examine the role of translation in shaping the complex dynamics of contemporary globalisation. How does translation contribute towards the experience of globalisation as a contradictory process involving both increasing levels of global cultural homogeneity and greater possibilities for multicultural diversity, interaction and hybridity?
  3. Explain the role and position of dominated and dominant languages in self-translation practices and analyse relevant examples to back up your arguments.
  4. Analyse strategies for the translation of multilingual/heterolingual elements in a relevant case-study of your choice and discuss the function of these elements in the source text and in its translation.
  5. Explore how conceptual metaphors in political discourse have been translated in your working languages. Draw on examples based on quantitative findings. Develop your discussion from a descriptive and cognitive perspective.
  6. Examine how the principle of accuracy or impartiality is manifested differently in public services interpreting and conference interpreting practices with respect to interpreters’ code of professional conduct.
  7. Examine how nonverbal communication affects interpreter-mediated interactions between minority language speakers and local public service providers? Focus on one or two para-verbal or non-verbal semiotic signifiers relating to the features of your working languages and situate your argument within the broader theoretical discussion.
  8. Paratexts can be considered as both functional and ideological in that they represent what Genette (1997) describes as a ‘threshold’ between authors and readers. Explore the role of paratextual elements (peritext and/or epitext) by carrying out a case study of one or more published translations.
